Position Description:

Senator Julian Cyr represents Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. First elected to the State Senate in November 2016, Senator Cyr is now serving in his third term and is among the youngest senators in the 40-member body. He is the Senate Assistant Majority Whip; Chair of the Joint Committee on Mental Health, Substance Use and Recovery; Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on Racial Equity, Civil Rights, and Inclusion; Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on Elder Affairs; and serves on committees with oversight of health care policy, public health, telecommunications and energy, COVID-19 emergency management, and redistricting.

The Legislative Aide manages scheduling and public engagement for Senator Cyr and works closely with the Senator and members of both the District and State House staff on legislation, constituent correspondence, policy research, committee work, office administration, event management, and constituent case work. The Legislative Aide also manages intern selection and supervision.

Position title: Legislative Aide 

Time: Full time, 37.5 hours per week

Start Date: May 2021

Position based in: Boston, MA (virtual for the time being)

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Scheduling:   

  • Organize, prioritize, and respond to incoming invitations and requests for meetings with Senator Cyr. 
  • Manage scheduling for Senator Cyr 
  • Work with the Chief of Staff, Legislative Director, Communications Director, and District Director to ensure that all the office’s priorities are represented in the Senator’s schedule  
  • Prepare daily advance document for the Senator outlining all details for calls and events 

Correspondence: 

  • Serve as legislative correspondent by drafting and responding to constituent inquiries and legislative advocacy. 
  • Answer and respond to constituent phone calls. 
  • Maintain a database of key contacts for our office. 

Legislation and policy: 

  • Research policy issues.  
  • Draft legislative testimony, support letters, and briefing materials.  
  • Track Senator Cyr’s priority legislation and co-sponsorships.  
  • Prepare Senator Cyr for legislative sessions and committee hearings, and staff the Senator in sessions and hearings.  
  • Communicate with advocates and constituents regarding content and status of legislation.  
  • Draft, file, and track amendments during the annual state budget process. 

Office Management: 

  • Manage interns, and assist the Chief of Staff with intern recruitment and selection.  
  • Point of contact in our office for the Senate Business office (supply needs, special events, parking requests, etc.).  
  • Plan and execute State House events, meetings, and briefings hosted by Senator Cyr.  
  •  Represent the Senator at events, meetings, and office hours.  
  • Coordinate  citations and resolutions for the office.   
  • Assist with constituent casework. 
  • Manage constituent requests for tours, visiting school groups to the State House, etc.   

This position requires the following: 

  • Excellent researchwriting, and oral communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team to solve problems and complete projects. 
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure in a demanding and fast-paced environment. 
  • Possesses humility and kindness when assisting the public. 
  • Willingness and ability to work some evening and weekend hours, especially during busy periods of the legislative year. 
  • Willingness and ability to travel to the district periodically. 
  • Bachelor’s degree; or Associate degree with more than 1 year of professional work experience. 

Strongly desired, but not required: 

  • Knowledge of or professional experience with the Massachusetts Legislature 
  • Knowledge of or professional experience with the Cape and Islands District that demonstrates an understanding of the region’s priorities and key issues. 
  • 1-3 years of relevant work experience. 

Salary Range: $43k-$46k per year. Plus benefits.
